The theory fueling congestion pricing is the one spanning our automotive lives: driving is a “privilege” government dispenses. Driving at rush hour is an even bigger privilege. So far, the state has granted this privilege for free (the dozens of highway, gas, sales, license, and car taxes we pay don’t count). But the gravy train is ending. The Economist, published an article that convincingly argues that social networks are not a business. This is probably not news to the management and investors of most social networks but should serve as additional fodder for those who see an end to the Social Networking/Web 2.0 valuation & funding gravy train. In the power structure, blacks and Latinos get along quite well, united by party (92 percent of elected Hispanics are Democrats) and a mutual desire to keep the affirmative action gravy train chugging. Ward Connerly, a black opponent of ethnic quotas, has noted that the heaviest pressure to circumvent a ban on racial preferences came from Latinos A new exhibit dedicated to the Nazi persecution of gays will be unveiled at the University of Rhode Island. Is America ready to pay reparations for slavery? Doesn’t Senator Barack Obama oppose reparations for slavery? Well, no. He doesn’t. In fact the reparations crowd in Washington and Chicago is salivating at the prospect Obama might stumble into the White House and put them on track for a reparations gravy train for slavery centuries ago. British MPs have rejected calls to toughen up the rules on providing receipts for expense claims. Claiming the majority of small purchases (between 25 and 250 pounds) were cash transaction for which receipts are not given. In my experience the only time a receipt is impossible to obtain is when somebody is trying to swindle the taxman. President Bush said last week that telecommunications companies that helped government wiretapping efforts need protection from ‘class-action plaintiff attorneys’ who see a ‘financial gravy train’ ahead. Democrats and privacy groups responded by accusing the Bush administration of trying to shut… “Contrary to the president’s false claim that those suing the telecoms are doing so because of a ‘financial gravy train,” those who are seeking justice against the companies that sold out their privacy are not in it for the money. This is about the rule of law, and about insisting that corporations not be treated as above the law. For the whiners who have been too long on the high horse of privilege and are crying crocodile tears about the proposed tax rates and the end of their gravy train, I have only one response, “Shut up and pay your damned taxes or get out of my country!”
