Media@McGill is presenting a second public event for Gil’s visit: ‘Broadband: a conversation with Gilberto Gil’, Mr. Gil will discuss his thoughts on some of the issues that arise when culture intersects with technology and politics. After giving a lecture at MIT, Brazil’s musician minister Gilberto Gil went to Silicon Valley to meet with a team of top executives of the computer world. Gil sat for hours with the likes of Jerry Yang, founder of Yahoo, Phillip Rosedale, creator of Second Life, and Joel Hyatt, Al Gore’s partner at Current TV. The famous Brazilian musician, politician and culture minster Gilberto Gil wants to resign from his culture minister position next year. A polyp was found on his vocal strings. Gilberto Gil, the man responsible for Brazil’s Ministry of Culture and one of the top-level Brazilian government officials is an example to be followed. He has made it his duty to fight draconian copyright laws: “Digital culture brings with it a new idea of intellectual property, and this new culture of sharing should inform government policies…” When so many Web 2.0 blogs focuses on customers, monetizing, business, getting bought by Google, who’s invested in who and so on and on, Gilberto Gil’s comments on open source take on a new resonance. Alone onstage at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday night, Gilberto Gil had a phantom band in his voice and his fingers. For those who are traveling in Rio de Janeiro, tomorrow night (Wednesday), be sure to check out Bungalafumenga! This band is nothing if not eclectic. They’ll play a mix of funk, samba and other rhythms, often doing their versions of well-loved songs by Nação Zumbi, O Rappa, Gilberto Gil, Paralamas and Tim Maia. Brazil/Culture Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso are the fathers to the Tropicalia movement. In his 1968 self titled album, he is backed by the legendary Os Mutantes.
